Safari For Windows Hacked in 2 Hours

Can you believe it? Apple released a beta of Safari for Windows (I knew it! They’re porting iLife to Windows.). Guess what. Someone found a security exploit in only two hours. Can you believe that? Oh well, it’s a beta after all.

Cheap Domains Anyone?

Thinking of starting a website or blog? Forget URLs like dork732.blogspot.com or whatever. You can now get .info domains (like www.ImANoob.info) from GoDaddy for only $0.99/year. A usual domain, with a .com TLD, costs around $7-$10 yearly (I use 1and1, which is on the cheaper end of the scale). $0.99/year? Don’t tell me that’s out of your price range! You can’t get any cheaper than that.

So, you decided to get a .info domain from GoDaddy? Now you’re probably thinking “Now what?” You need a blog now. If you want really easy (and free), then get a Blogger.com account and point your domain at it (instructions on the site) Personally, I prefer Wordpress to Blogger, so I’d get free hosting from somewhere like Awardspace and point the domain there (make sure the domain is pointing to Awardspace before installing Wordpress).

Of course, I don’t really use free hosting. You could if you have a tight budget, though.

What’s the Most Annoying Ad Type?

Ads: They help keep websites afloat, and they annoy users. Well, it depends on the ad. Personally, I don’t mind standard AdSense-style ads. Others, though….

So what type of ad is the most irritating? Keep reading to find out.

The Contenders

Flashing/Vibrating Ads

Imagine this: You’re trying to read a webpage, but this distracting banner ad reading “You won [fill_in_the_blank]! Click here to claim your prize!” is flashing red and yellow…while vibrating. Doesn’t take much imagination, does it?

In-Video “Commercials”

Commercials belong on TV, not in online video clips. On IMDB you have to watch a stupid ad before you can view a trailer. On Shockwave.com you have to watch an irritating commercial before a game loads. They’re slowly becoming more common, unfortunately.

Flash-Based Banners With Sound

At first, they look like any old banner ad. Then you hear stupid voice-clips and sound effects blaring through your speakers.

The “Winner”

The winner of the Most Annoying Ad Type Award goes to…… “In-Video ‘Commercials’”, with ‘Flash-Based Banners With Sound’ a close second. Despite the annoyance of having unwanted sounds blaring through your speakers, unwanted videos are worse. Do you really want to be forced to watch a 30-second commercial before you can see a 1-minute video clip? No way! If YouTube adds these, I’ll be very annoyed.

New TLDs?

According to a post on Yahoo News, ICANN is planning to create new general-use Top Level Domains (like .com or .net) sometime in mid-2008.

About time! The .com TLD is getting a little full, and .net is generally a second choice. I’d like .web or something similar. We need one that’s a good .com alternative. However, it doesn’t matter what new TLDs are added unless some education is done, as the pathetic .info has proven.

People always expect addresses to be www.somethingobvious.com. Annoying it may be, that’s how it is. The average web user will try .com before anything else, which will either lead them to a dead-end or a competitor….neither of which are desirable.

Somehow, web users need to be taught how to browse better. Even better, browsers should be redesigned so remembering the exact TLD is unnecessary. Firefox does this already, to an extent. If I type pizzahut, Firefox consults google and finds that pizzahut.com is the one I most likely want, and it goes there. Eventually all the TLDs ending in .com will be take, and they will be valued at exorbitant rates due to scarcity.

IE8? Who cares?

I don’t care about IE (I’ve used Firefox since it came out). Anyway, Microsoft has been hinting about Internet Explorer 8. Nothing much, it’s just playing catch-up to the reliablility of Firefox, and the features of Firefox 3. What they conventiantly didn’t mention is the fact that IE8 will only be for Vista. With IE7, there are already some things that only work on the Vista platform. With Vista failing so far, Microsoft will most definitely prop it up by making you “upgrade” to use IE8. Who’s going to fall for that? Upgrade from IE7 to Firefox 3 and buy a Mac when you need a new computer. Problem solved.

POTC Online Beta: Stupid Bug!

Arrrg! I’ve reached the least fun part of beta testing–having your progress halted by a bug. After making a bit of progress in Pirates of the Caribbean Online, I hit a bug with the game. Mr. Gibbs is refusing to recognize me. After doing two quest-things for him, he’s just sitting there saying “What do you want?”. I’m probably going to have to start over again if I want to continue with the storyline.

I guess I’ll just do more freeform gameplay until the game is released, then start over. Even after hours of playing, I’ve barely dented the main storyline. Disney’s VR Studio sure knows how to make a game that lasts…

Great, now my younger brothers are going to continue with the game and do all the cool stuff before me.
